Unconventional Places for Dishwashers: A Comparative Study of Unexpected Appliance Installations

From the balcony to the bathroom, dishwashers often find themselves in the most unexpected of places. As a professional in the field, I've come across several examples of these unusual placements, each with its own unique story and reasoning behind them.

The Balcony Dilemma

During one particularly memorable repair visit, I encountered a dishwasher that was set up on a balcony. Initially, my client assured me that the washing machine had to be moved for the upcoming winter months. However, a closer look revealed a sophisticated solution where the drain was directed through an external wall, leading directly back into the kitchen. Despite my curiosity, I wasn't privy to what truly motivated the move, so I decided to respect their privacy.

Dishwashers in Unconventional Locations

Throughout my tenure, I've observed dishwashers in a variety of unusual places, often due to practical or spatial constraints:

On top of the washing machine in the laundry room. In the bathroom, making efficient use of vertical space. On the outside balcony, much like the scenario on the balcony mentioned earlier. On top of the kitchen sink, maximizing counter space. In the garage, perfect for cars or pets rather than regular cooking.

In addition to these locations, I've also witnessed dishwashers placed in less expected spaces but with a logical explanation behind them:

In a school science room, utilizing a resource that might be available. At the end of a large garden, combining a functional kitchen area with a barbecue setup, all within a single outdoor space. In an outdoor covered entertainment area, providing easy access post-event cleaning.

A Split-Level House Unveiled

One of the most peculiar houses I've encountered is a split-level design. In this case, the dining room is located on the second floor, complete with a small kitchenette. The actual kitchen, however, is on the ground floor. The downstairs area, although labeled as the living space for dining, is more resembled by a small living room. When preparing food, they use the downstairs kitchen, which is also connected to a customized dumbwaiter for easy transporting of dishes and food. This ingenious design surprisingly makes the process easier, particularly after a party.

Furthermore, the house's layout is quite convoluted. You need to pass through the master bathroom to reach the bedrooms, with two of them sharing a closet. Navigating to the laundry area, which has been relocated to the back basement, necessitates going outside and then back in, through the laundry shoot that was previously there. This unique arrangement, while initially confusing, facilitates a practical workflow for its occupants.
