Navigating the New Normal: How to Get Your Haircut at Home

The closure of barbershops and hairdressers due to the pandemic has forced many to find alternative solutions for their haircare needs. My colleagues and I adopted different methods, including getting haircuts from family members or attempting to cut our own hair. While some have successfully made the transition, others are finding it challenging.

The Transition to Home Haircuts

Unlike many others, my three male colleagues have been getting their haircuts from family members. One of them cut his own hair, while another asked his wife to do it and the third got a haircut from his daughter. They rely on short hairstyles due to their frequent visits to the salon before the pandemic. However, for me, the situation was different. My last haircut was on December 14, 2020, and the first since the lockdown ended on Friday, after almost three months. Despite going longer between haircuts, I decided early last year to avoid short hair due to the limitations imposed by the pandemic. Now, having split ends, I had to make the tough decision to cut my hair myself.

It's a universally accepted truth that DIY haircuts are not a good idea. It's recommended to find a mobile hairdresser in your area, either through Facebook or by advertising. Ensure that the hairdresser has the appropriate qualifications, specifically level 3 qualifications for mobile work. Good luck!

Government and Barbershops

The government bears the responsibility for allowing barbershops to reopen during the pandemic. Despite this, some individuals like me find themselves without options. I personally avoid cutting my own hair, which is a blessing considering my mother has provided excellent haircuts in the past. Since learning from her, I have relied on her expertise and comfort in handling salon scissors. However, the pandemic has drawn attention to the risks involved in visiting salons. Therefore, it's important to buy good hair scissors; a quality tool makes a significant difference in how your haircut turns out.

Temporary Solutions and Future Outlook

The current situation has led to a surge in DIY haircuts. People are taking matters into their own hands, and while it might be a temporary solution, the future will likely see a return to salons. In the meantime, those who are unable to find a mobile hairdresser can consider cutting their own hair. But it's crucial to approach it with caution, as mistakes can happen. Split ends, uneven styles, and overall dissatisfaction are common outcomes of attempting it yourself. It's also worth noting the story of a hairdresser in Missouri who accidentally contaminated 160 people, emphasizing the risks involved in amateur styling.

At the core of the issue is patience and prioritizing safety. Waiting for salons to reopen or finding a local mobile hairdresser are the most practical solutions. Additionally, investing in proper hair tools can make the process more manageable. For those who frequent salons regularly, purchasing a pair of scissors (or a shaving machine for longer hair) and learning the basics can be a worthwhile investment.

As the world progresses towards a post-pandemic era, the need for quality haircare will only increase. Embrace the transition, embrace the tools, and take care of your own hair until the salons are safe and open once more.
