A Journey Through Time: From Medieval Kingdom to Silicon Valley

My hometown is a journey through time, from the ancient times when it was a Medieval kingdom to its current status as a bustling tech hub. This unique history, coupled with the urban evolution, makes it stand out to me and offers a fascinating blend of the past and the present.

Medieval Roots

The medieval past of my hometown, called Deheubarth, is a story that has captivated my mind. It was a time when my 29th great-grandmother, Princess Gwenllian, fought valiantly against the Normans. As one of the few women in Welsh Medieval history to take part in battle, Gwenllian's legendary story has always inspired me. This connection to a warrior princess from the 12th century adds a unique dimension to my hometown, making it stand out as a place of historical importance.

From Craft to Technology

Growing up in the small town of Merrimac, Massachusetts, offers a story of transformation. In the early 1900s, Merrimac was globally recognized for its horse-drawn carriage industry. However, as the years passed, the town evolved into a very different place. It turned into a quiet cottage community, reminiscent of Mayberry from The Andy Griffith Show. The area was filled with orchards, especially cherries and apricots, and some nut fields. Major employers like NASA, HP, and Lockheed brought in significant changes, paving the way for a new era of technological advancements, leading to the renaming of the region as Silicon Valley. The rapid shift in industry values and the quality of life for the residents highlight the unique transformation the area has undergone.

Modern Days in Northern Minnesota

Now, I live in a northern Minnesota city of 15,000 people, a far cry from my small-town roots. The big employers here are a state university, a regional hospital, and state/local government. The city's proximity to Lake Superior adds to its charm, offering blissful summers and harsh winters. It’s also home to the only US team that ever won medals in winter Olympic curling, proving the community's rich cultural heritage.

Even though it’s a remote area, the city doesn’t lack in convenience. The airport, serviced by Delta, provides an easy connection to other parts of the country. The city also boasts of livable qualities, such as the absence of traffic jams and access to art displays on public corners. Additionally, the city's proximity to the Mississippi River's official beginning adds to its charm, sitting just 1/4 mile from a small, slowly flowing stream, making it a unique and peaceful place to call home.

Ultimately, my hometown is not just a place of historical significance or rapid industrial growth; it’s a place that, despite its changes, retains qualities that make it an attractive and comfortable living environment. The affordability and the presence of cultural and recreational activities make it an ideal place to reside.
