A Classic Tres Leches Cake Recipe: Create a Delicious Copycat at Home

Tres leches cake, also known as three milk cake, is a traditional Latin American dessert that has stolen hearts and palettes around the world. While we cannot disclose the exact recipe from Houston's restaurant, we are happy to share a classic and delicious recipe that closely resembles the one served there. Follow this guide to create your own rich and moist tres leches cake.

Ingredients

For the Cake:

1 cup all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 5 large eggs, separated 1 cup granulated sugar 1/2 cup whole milk 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Milk Mixture:

1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk 1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk 1 cup whole milk

For the Topping:

1 cup heavy whipping cream 2 tablespoons powdered sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Ground cinnamon (optional for garnish)

Instructions

Bake the Cake

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x13-inch baking dish. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. In a separate bowl, beat the egg yolks with 1 cup of sugar until light and fluffy. Stir in the milk and vanilla. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the egg yolk mixture and mix until just combined. In another bowl, beat the egg whites until soft peaks form. Gradually add the remaining 1 cup of sugar and continue beating until stiff peaks form. Gently fold the egg whites into the batter until no white streaks remain. Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool completely in the pan.

Prepare the Milk Mixture

In a bowl, whisk together the sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, and whole milk.

Soak the Cake

Once the cake is cool, poke holes all over the surface using a fork or skewer. Slowly pour the milk mixture over the cake, allowing it to soak in. Let it sit for at least 30 minutes or overnight in the refrigerator for best results.

Make the Topping

In a mixing bowl, whip the heavy cream with the powdered sugar and vanilla until soft peaks form.

Serve

Optionally, sprinkle with ground cinnamon before serving. Cut into squares and enjoy!

This recipe should give you a rich and moist tres leches cake, reminiscent of the one served at Houston's. Enjoy your baking!
